Bill Gates: a biography
Bill Gates (William Henry Gates III) is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist and former CEO of Microsoft Corporation. In 1975, he founded Microsoft together with Paul Allen. The software company became a pioneer of the personal computer industry, and under Gates’ leadership it grew into one of the most successful and innovative tech companies in the world. In 2000, he stepped down as CEO and stayed on as chairman.
In 2014, he stepped down as chairman to devote more of his time to philanthropy and other interests. Since then, he has focused mainly on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which he founded with his former wife, Melinda Gates. Childhood
Bill Gates grew up in Seattle, Washington, the son of William H. Gates Sr., a lawyer, and Mary Maxwell Gates, a teacher. He has two sisters, Kristianne and Libby. Bill was fascinated by computers from an early age, and at school he quickly stood out for his intelligence and his passion for programming. In the late 1960s, his school gave him access to a computer, and he started writing programs on it. The experience inspired him and convinced him that computers had a big future.
As a kid, Gates was always taking on programming projects and joining computer clubs. Personal life
In 1994, Gates married Melinda French, who took the name Melinda Gates. They met and fell in love while working at Microsoft. Their marriage lasted 27 years, until they announced their divorce in 2021. They have three children: Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe.
The family has worked hard to protect the children’s privacy and keep them out of the media spotlight. Bill and Melinda wanted them to have a normal upbringing and the freedom to explore the world and their own interests. After the divorce, the couple said they would keep working together at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which they set up in 2000. They stayed committed to its work on global health, education and poverty, and the split didn’t change their shared mission to help people and make the world better. In May 2024, Melinda decided to leave the foundation.
Philanthropy
Gates is known not only as the co-founder of Microsoft but also as a dedicated philanthropist. After leaving his full-time role at Microsoft in 2008, he gave much of his time to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
