How to calculate profit per order
Profit per order is what is left of the customer’s money after you pay for everything the order involves. The calculator goes through these steps:
- Removes VAT or sales tax, because it is not your revenue.
- Subtracts the cost of goods, packaging and shipping when you pay for it.
- Subtracts card processing and cash on delivery fees.
- Adds the losses from refused parcels and returns.
- Spreads ad spend and fixed costs over the orders that are actually delivered.
With the sample numbers, a $75 order leaves about $4.70 of profit and the break-even ROAS is about 2.9. A store that is happy with a ROAS of 3.5 is really keeping less than $5 per sale.
Break-even ROAS formula
Break-even ROAS = order value ÷ the most you can spend on ads per order and still break even
Questions and answers
Taxes are removed first, so all costs should be entered without VAT if you can reclaim it. Ad spend and refused parcels are spread over the orders that are actually delivered. Returns remove the revenue of returned orders, add back the items you can resell and add return shipping if you pay for it. Fixed costs are divided by delivered orders per month.
How do I calculate profit per order?
Take the revenue without VAT and subtract the cost of goods, shipping and packaging, payment fees, the losses from refused parcels and returns, your ad spend per order and a share of your fixed costs. The calculator does exactly that for you.
What is a good profit margin for an online store?
It depends on the niche, but a net margin below 10% per order leaves little room for mistakes or for growing your ad spend. The calculator flags anything under 10% as a thin margin.
What is break-even ROAS?
The lowest ROAS at which an order still makes zero profit after all costs. If your ads run below it, every sale costs you money. It depends on your margin, shipping, fees and returns, so it is different for every store.
Why is my real ROAS lower than the one in Google or Meta?
Ad platforms count placed orders at full price. Some of those orders are refused at the door or returned later, so the money you actually keep is smaller.
Why do refused parcels cost so much?
You pay the carrier both ways and packaging, and you also paid for the ad that brought the order. All of that has to be covered by the orders that do get delivered.
