Do you need a copywriter for online marketing and SEO?

Online business (or, as most of us put it, “making money on the internet”) is growing up fast. It now touches every part of our lives and has created a whole range of new jobs, specialties and career paths. One of them matters more than most: the copywriter. But do we really know what copywriters do? And more to the point, do you actually need one for online marketing and SEO, the two pillars every online venture needs to launch and thrive?

Every online business lives by one rule: content is king. Quality content, clear instructions and the right marketing messages can make your business stand out. In recent years, Google has put more and more weight on original, high-quality writing when it decides how to rank websites. That’s exactly why we need experts who can fill this niche and help the web grow.

To many people, including plenty who work online, a copywriter is just the anonymous author of a web page, the person behind articles on all kinds of blogs and the “writer” who produces copy for SEO. That’s all part of the job, but it’s far from the whole picture. A copywriter is the wordsmith behind your ad campaigns. They don’t just bring words that fit your SEO strategy. They bring the ideas you need to build your entire marketing strategy. At large companies abroad, copywriters go even further: they often guide other team members (developers, customer service staff, even graphic designers) as they plan, launch and grow a successful online ad campaign.

In short, a copywriter’s job is to sell: to grab attention and nudge people to buy a product, use a service or visit a website. Think of the copywriter as the modern journalist of online business. The difference is that they write for the client, not for themselves, and adapt their style to the client’s business plans and, above all, to how the target audience thinks. That also means the copywriter is “censored” in a way. Not the kind of censorship we know from journalism, of course, but a set of instructions and guidelines: a keyword list, word count limits, a focus on one specific group of users and so on.

Within those limits, though, the copywriter is free to build any strategy that gets people excited. That’s exactly why entrepreneurs need great copywriting. You may have a business, a growth plan and a clear audience, but you need a copywriter’s creativity to bring those plans to life in an original way and win over exactly the right people. Finding a good copywriter who fits your needs isn’t easy, so take it seriously. Otherwise, your online reputation may suffer.

Successful online marketing and great SEO depend on skilled copywriters, marketers and SEO specialists working together, just as a working website depends on the front-end and back-end developers who build it and the designers who shape it. Copywriting isn’t optional for your business. The copywriters you work with are your bridge to your future audience and to the impression it forms of you.

So, do you need a copywriter for successful online marketing and SEO? Yes! Unless you’re happy being just another website on the internet.
