Everyday leadership – ordinary people having an extraordinary impact on other people’s lives
Do you call yourself a leader? According to Drew Dudley, leadership is something we have put on a pedestal and we hardly ever recognize a true leader in our everyday lives. What’s more, leaders themselves refuse to be given this title as in most people’s eyes leadership is about changing the world rather than in everyday activities affecting the individual.
The everyday leader is not someone who made major changes in the society or greatly influenced a large community. It’s the ordinary person that had an extraordinary impact on another person’s life. I am sure you have all had such moments in which there was a person saying something or doing something that changed your life for the better. This is the everyday leader. What’s more, you may as well be an everyday leader for you usually have no idea you have had a strong impact on somebody else’s life.
Mattering to other people is a very powerful tool, “frightening” as Drew Dudley describes it in his TED talk. Here’s his approach towards this matter, “We need to get over our fear of how extraordinarily powerful we can be in each other’s lives. We need to get over it so we can move beyond it, and our little brothers and our little sisters, and one day our kids — or our kids right now — can watch and start to value the impact we can have on each other’s lives more than money and power and titles and influence.”
Redefining leadership and narrowing it down to changing even one person’s understanding, is a big deal. It gives power to the everyday leader and makes it necessary to say “Thank you” to the people who care, to those who have this extraordinary power to change lives with their attitude, wisdom, personal example, and personality.
