Branson is known for his relentless drive to innovate, his ambitious projects and his sense of social responsibility. He doesn’t just build successful businesses. He also throws himself into social causes, trying to change the world for the better. All of this makes him a major figure in both entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

Early years

Richard Branson was born into a middle-class family in Blackheath, London. His father, Edward James Branson, was a barrister, and his mother, Eve Branson, was a flight attendant. He grew up in a loving home that encouraged curiosity and independence. But dyslexia made school a struggle and got in the way of traditional learning. Later, those same struggles would fuel his entrepreneurial spirit and his unconventional approach to business.

Despite his trouble at school, Branson was resourceful from an early age. At 16, he left school to launch his first venture, a youth culture magazine called “Student.” That early taste of entrepreneurship marked the start of a remarkable journey.

Driven to build something of his own, he founded “Student” magazine in 1966. The publication focused on the counterculture and gave young writers and artists a platform. Its success boosted Branson’s confidence and laid the groundwork for what came next.

Building on that success, Branson founded Virgin Records in 1972. The label made its name with bold signings such as the Sex Pistols, and years later it landed the Rolling Stones. His willingness to take risks and challenge the music industry’s established norms played a key role in Virgin Records’ meteoric rise.
