Marketing terms explained through simple examples that will both make you laugh and make you think

Marketing, or the way you communicate the value of your product/service/brand to your clients, can be divided into about a hundred different types. To make it easier for you, an American university teacher has explained the main types of marketing, as well as some of the most commonly used marketing terms through simple examples that will both make you laugh and make you think:

  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. You go straight up to her and break the ice with the following line: “I am very rich. Go out with me!” That’s direct marketing.
  • You are at a party, having fun with your friends. The sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. One of your friends goes up to her, points at you and tells her that you are very rich and she should go out with you. That’s advertising.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. You manage to get her number and call her the next day with the words: “I am very rich. Go out with me!” That’s telemarketing.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. You politely introduce yourself, get her a drink, make her compliments during the whole evening, on the way out you open the door for her and offer her a ride home. At the end of the evening you say: “Did I mention I am rich? Will you go out with me?” That’s public relations.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. She approaches you and says: “You are very rich. I want to go out with you!” That’s brand recognition.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. You go straight up to her and break the ice with the following line: “I am very rich. Go out with me!” She turns to you and splashes her drink in your face. That’s customer feedback.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. You go straight up to her and break the ice with the following line: “I am very rich. Go out with me!” She smiles at you and then her boyfriend shows up and introduces himself. That’s a demand and supply gap.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. Before you manage to get yourself together and approach her, another guy approaches her and tells her he is very rich. She goes out with him. That’s competition eating into your market share.
  • You are at a party and the sexiest girl you’ve ever seen enters the room. Right before you approach her to tell her you are rich and ask her if she will go out with you, your wife arrives. That’s restriction for entering new markets.

Which of there marketing techniques have you used? Which one works best for your product/service/brand? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
